«The memory of elsewhere told through
the material of here»
During a trip to the Basque country, I was fascinated by certain landscapes.
These places, in total contrast to the north where I live, made an impression on me.
Particularly in Guéthary, where these strata emerging from the ocean take on the dimension of a frontier between land and ocean.
Back home, I wanted to capture the image of these unique geological formations. To tell this story, I created two sculptures using two different local materials from the North.
I polished the schist from the slag heaps, and hand-sculpted the blue stone from Hainaut.
These materials are intrinsic to the landscapes of the North.
These sculptures are interpretations of the strata of rock that come into contact with the liquid surface of water.
The sensoriality of the project is conveyed through nature and the materials it offers, shaped by their environment and craftsmanship, to take on an extra dimension of narrative.
