DECATHLON x ENSAD chair,
“designing for later,” proscpetive design.
With Mathis Marty

In 2040, a new law shakes up the world of large corporations.
Designed to curb over-extraction, it overturns the rules of ownership: from now on, the producers of an object will remain the unmovable owners of the material that constitutes the good.
How will this major shift affect everyday life for individuals? How can it be made useful, enjoyable, and playful?

Encouraged by a friend, Matthieu briefly joins a small amateur football club. On his new MATTER app by DECATHLON, he equips himself with a jersey, cleats, and a jump rope, items that now join his digital locker. Two months later, he has left the club, and the equipment clutters his closet. Matthieu decides to “dematerialize,” meaning he returns the material to DECATHLON. In his digital locker, each item now exists virtually in the form of an “Ima,” for immaterial.
Every time Matthieu converts an item into an Ima, a rewards counter spins. It spins pretty fast, in fact, because Matthieu has taken good care of his cleats and earns a bonus. He will soon unlock a complimentary sports nutrition course. After the course, he gets motivated again and signs up for the gym.
He rematerializes the jersey in a more understated color and the jump rope in a more compact model so he can take it everywhere.
